Smart glasses and AR: who actually makes money in the small-cap layer

Five listed names, four private challengers, the platforms above them and the supply chain underneath, mapped from filings and the independent analysts, with a comparison table and eight sector risks.

Abstract

The smart-glasses boom is real and almost entirely without displays. Counterpoint counts shipments up 263% in the first half of 2026 with 96% of units carrying no display; IDC expects 13.6 million display-less glasses in 2026 against 3.0 million with optical see-through displays. The microdisplay and waveguide companies that trade as small caps sell into the smaller, faster-growing line.

This report profiles the five listed names an investor meets when searching the sector (Kopin, Vuzix, MicroVision, Himax and WiMi), finds that only one is profitable and one has left the display business altogether, and sets them against the private challengers (Rokid, Xreal, Even Realities, Brilliant Labs), the platforms (Meta, Google and Samsung, Snap, Apple as reported, Microsoft's exit) and the defence programmes that may decide who scales. A supply-chain map shows which brand uses whose display, waveguide and chip, where the public record allows.

It is research of general circulation from public sources, with every figure cited. It is not a recommendation, a price target or advice to any reader, and no company has paid for its place in it.

Key findings
  1. Of the five listed names, only Himax is profitable (Q2 2026 net income $19.9M on $227M revenue), and its AR revenue is not disclosed; Kopin's $0.9M GAAP profit came from investment gains and a tax benefit over a $3.5M operating loss.
  2. MicroVision is a lidar company now: Q3 2026 revenue $2.4M, net loss $12.2M, going-concern doubt in the Q2 10-Q, a 1-for-15 reverse split in August. It still appears in 'AR stock' screens.
  3. Kopin is the US defence display house: 74% of 2025 revenue from defence, DRS alone 63%; $34M of cumulative Army colour-microLED funding; a $19.7M judgment under appeal with $24.2M of cash posted as bond; controls 'not effective' at FY2025.
  4. The waveguide market is consolidating around platforms: Meta's display glasses use Lumus optics made with SCHOTT; AAC is buying Dispelix; Applied Materials is co-developing with EssilorLuxottica; Samsung owns eMagin. Vuzix is the remaining independent US maker.
  5. Defence is slow money: the Army's SBMC prototyping awards total about $475M (Anduril with Meta, Rivet, Elbit), and a production decision is not expected before 2028.
  6. Omdia sizes the AR display component market at $156M in 2026 (4.1M units), growing to 21M units by 2030; the headline device forecasts (IDC, ARtillery) are twenty to forty times larger because they count whole devices and software.
