Introducing First Look Points, Reader Groups and the Daily Question

Research gets better when readers talk back. A daily question, private reader groups on the platforms you already use, and points for the habits that help, never for posts about a stock.

Why we built it

First Look was built to be read. The best research, it turns out, comes from readers who talk back: who tell us what was useful, ask the question we missed and bring the people they trust. So the site now has a daily question, a reader page called My First Look, reader groups and First Look Points.

The daily question

One question a day about how you research and what you want from us: never a price prediction, never buy or sell. Answering takes one tap and earns five points, and we publish the totals in the Thursday weekly.

Talk in public and in private

In public, talk to us on our LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram pages; reports and results dates get their own posts. In private, our moderated readers' group on LinkedIn opens soon for readers who confirm their email, and you can start your own group on LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Telegram or Facebook. My First Look gives you the description, our rules and your invite link; the group stays yours.

A note on LinkedIn: its developer products cover sign-in, sharing and company-page posts, not creating or running groups, so groups are made on LinkedIn itself. We connect them through the newsletter.

First Look Points

Points reward the habits that make the research better: checking in on market days, answering the question, telling us what was useful, sharing our own newsletter content, starting a group and inviting people you know. Activity points are capped each day. An invitation counts only when the person confirms their own email, and we check before any perk goes out.

The perks are research and community perks: your Digital VIP Black Card in silver, gold and full VIP editions, a monthly research request, an invitation to the readers' group, a seat at the quarterly reader Q&A and a say in which company we feature next.

The line we don't cross

We never reward anyone for posting about a company or a security. A take you share about a company carries no invite code and earns nothing; it carries your position line instead, because our first community rule is to say what you hold. Points have no cash value and give no access to any investment.

Everything here is research of general circulation, not advice and not an offer of any security.

Key Takeaways
  • A daily question about how you research, with totals in the Thursday weekly.
  • Public conversation on our pages; private conversation in our LinkedIn group and the groups you start.
  • Points for habits and confirmed invitations, capped daily, checked before any perk goes out.
  • Never a reward for posting about a company; every take carries the writer's position line.
