Kara Kennedy Joins First Look Equities Advisory Board

Kara Kennedy Joins First Look Equities Advisory Board, and was recently interviewed by Investor Town Hall on her experience teaming up with First Look Equities. As a compliance solutions specialist for small and mid-capital businesses, Kara has attended prior business networking events and subsequently, she has valuable insight into how First Look Equities stands out above the rest. WE ARE DIFFERENT One of the most notable differences that Kara remarks upon during her interview is that networking events coordinated by First Look Equities have a very grassroots, local, personal feel to them. She contrasted the warm, proactive introductions offered during the First Look Equities event she attended to others in the industry, where contacts can be difficult to initiate among new faces and companies. WE GROW NEW BUSINESS Kara also emphasized how impressed she was by the strategic and intentional follow-up with clients that resulted from the First Look Equities event. […]

Tips For Being A Successful Business Networker

Business networking has grown immensely over the past few years. Afterall, “It isn’t what you know; it’s who you know.” Business relationships open many doors to business opportunities whether it be a job offer, recommendation, or introduction to another person. The more people that you know, the more opportunities you have the chance of being exposed too. Here are some helpful tips on how to be a successful business networker. Be Genuine Let’s be honest. Others can tell when you are being “fake.” Being genuine and authentic will help you build trusting relationships where you allow others to help you while also having the opportunity to help others. Set Goals Developing your own personal business goals gives you the opportunity to find groups with people that will support you and help you to achieve those goals. Visit as many different networking groups as you can. If it sparks your interest, it […]

Take Your Next Networking Event By Storm

Networking events are a great way to put your business on display and potentially grow it. Usually, we think that simply attending a networking event will give us the publicity, but networking events have a lot more to offer if you do them correctly. Plan Ahead One way to get the most out of a networking event is by researching the people that will be attending. Research the people that you are trying to impress so that you can cater your idea to their likes, dislikes, and background. You can also find out ahead of time what you may have in common with other people at the event and use that as a strength to market yourself and your ideas. Ask Questions and Connect Instead of talking about yourself, talk about others. Ask people questions about themselves, their goals, and their ideas. Giving people the opportunity to tell you about themselves […]

Regulation A+: The Key To Success Is Marketing

JOBS Act equity crowdfunding and Regulation A+ Mini-IPOs are not like the Field of Dreams. Going online and creating a funding campaign on a site like BankRoll does not mean that investors will come. Without marketing, the campaign will likely fail. The good news is, marketed correctly and effectively, you can raise millions of dollars in new capital. My article for Entrepreneur on this topic is linked here and tells you all about this. But for those who do not have 5 minutes to read the brief article, here are some highlights: • With a Mini-IPO, unlike full-blown IPOs, there is no Goldman Sachs or Merrill Lynch instructing thousands of their brokers to push the IPO stock out to clients. With a Regulation A+ offering, nobody is promoting the stock to potential investors except the company raising money, and whoever they hire to market the offering. • Most people have no […]

An In Depth Q&A on the SEC’s Equity Crowdfunding Rules With Bankless Times

Bankless Times is one of my favorite online publications. I did an in-depth interview with them on some of the lesser-known provisions from the 686 pages of SEC rules just released for Title III equity crowdfunding. A few highlights, followed by the link: “There are 686 pages of SEC rules for this nine-page law, so you can imagine there are some hidden gems in there. The good news is, the SEC took away the audit requirement for first time users of the law, so now anyone using equity crowdfunding to raise from $100,000 to $1 million only needs “reviewed” financials, which is far less costly.” “For people who think this will be just like pre-selling a new smart watch on Kickstarter, they will have some surprises coming. Equity crowdfunding involves the sale of securities. There are state and federal laws to comply with, and bad things can happen to people who […]

The New Equity Crowdfunding Law

Hot off the presses, as if they use “presses” to publish online: my article for Entrepreneur.com: “What the New Equity Crowdfunding Rules Mean for Entrepreneurs.” Some highlights, if you don’t have 6 minutes to read the whole thing: “For those who have run out of Ambien, the hundreds of pages of new rules will provide a welcome sleep aid. But for professionals who plan to use these rules to help companies raise new capital, it is required reading. Bring on the Red Bull.” “Despite the hopes of many of us that the SEC would pull a regulatory rabbit out of a hat and raise the ceiling to $5 million, the limit on what a company can raise through Title III equity crowdfunding remains at $1 million.” “The SEC actually tightened up the amounts that can be invested by each individual, which is not good news for entrepreneurs.” “If a company using […]

If I Had More Time, I’d Have Written a Shorter Speech

Too many people talk too long when they get the chance to present. Anyone can stand up and ramble on forever, boring their audience and never reaching a clear conclusion. You may think you’re interesting and that you’ve covered a lot of territory, but your listener is asking, “So what’s in it for me?” It takes a lot of preparation to make your points short and sweet but the rewards will be worth it. People will remember what you say. People will understand your ideas. People will respond to your call to action. Why is brevity so critically important? First of all, Steve Jobs, who left nothing to chance, is quoted in the book, The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs as saying, “after 10 minutes you’re going to lose your listeners’ attention.” According to the master presenter, people simply can’t concentrate for longer than that so you’ve got to either keep […]
